Sola Fide
My Son, Bear Cub, loves to keep treasures in a big chest. These treasures are real….rocks, yes but all with a meaning. Money, yes, but it belonged once to my grandfather. Gifts that can not be replaced, letters that can not be written again; these treasures are not things that you can go and buy somewhere. They are special, unique, mostly because all of them were given to him.

There are some special days when Dear Son, gets to open his big coffer, and we get to see (and only see) what’s inside. That day, believe me, it’s amazing.
I have asked him, “which of all these treasures is your favorite?”
You know the answer…“I can’t choose.”
Well, now I can’t choose my own words to tell you about this great treasure: Sola Fide.
It’s a treasure, a real treasure that can not be robbed from those that God has called his very own.
It’s a treasure because we could not buy it…ever.
It’s a treasure because it is given, not earned.
Sola Fide, Faith Alone, without it our whole system of beliefs would just banish, because it is the heart of our hope. it was the match that started the fire of the Reformation.
“What must I do to be saved?” that question was raised in a jail, by a man who thought he was free, yet, he asked with urgency, with great trembling and fear. The answer, was plainly given…
“Believe”…not in yourself, not in miracles, not in peace and a green planet.
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:28-31)
Sola Fide, a gift from God.
A treasure that is given, not earned.
Romans 3:23-24
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”
I am daily engaged in a journey to heaven, because He wanted so, it pleased Him to call me, it pleased Him to freely give me grace.
Sola Fide. No merits for me, all glory to God.
“Thou God of All Grace,
Thou hast given me a Saviour,
produce in me a faith to live by Him,
to make Him all my desire,
all my hope,
all my glory.”
Excerpt from “The Saviour”, a Puritan prayer found in “The Valley of Vision”.
“My God,
I bless thee that thou hast given me the eye of faith,
to see thee as Father,
to know thee as covenant God,to experience thy love planted in me;
For faith is the grace of union,
by which I spell out my entitlement to thee;
Faith casts my anchor upwards where I trust in thee
and engage thee to be my Lord.”
Excerpt from “Faith”, ibid p, 160
You can read here a sermon about Justification on Faith Alone, by John Piper.
